Type ‘catalunya wine’ into Google and the chances are that after the obligatory Wikipedia entry (which is certainly a decent primer) you will find CatalunyaWine.com.
If you want to discover the wonders of the Catalan wine region that the rest of the world is even now only just discovering then this is the place to begin your journey.
Catalunya Wine exists to promote Catalan wines to the English-speaking world. Run by Canadian expat Tim Brown and aided by his Cuban-born (but with Catalan roots) wife Lis, the website chronicles Tim’s journey through this unique wine region as he exposes the great wines of Catalunya to promote them to hotels and restaurants both here and abroad.
Catalunya Wine Videos
Video is a big part of Catalunya Wine and Tim documents all his trips with video footage of the wineries and vineyards he visits and the wine growers and wine makers he interviews. Watching these videos you get a real sense of the passion these great exponents of Catalan wine have for their craft and the heritage that goes with it.
The Catalan Wine Regions or Appellations
My knowledge of Catalan wine is limited, that was why I was on Google in the first place. I’d heard of Penedès, Priorat, Empordà and Montsant, but the other Catalan appellations were new to me: Terra Alta, Pla de Bages, Costers del Segre, Conca de Barberà, Alella, and of course, though I didn’t know this was an actual Denominació d’Origen, Tarragona.
Each of these regions are covered in detail on the site with information on the types of grapes grown; accompanying videos, photo galleries and interviews; and links to all the vineyards in each region. There is a lot to consume, but all fascinating if you take the time.
The Catalunya Wine Shop
And what’s the point of all this fabulous knowledge about these little known independent wineries in Catalonia if you can’t actually get to the stuff very easily. Sure you’ll find them in bodegas around Barcelona. But if you’re feeling a little lethargic and don’t fancy carrying a box of wine across town then get online and peruse the fine selection at shop.catalunyawine.com.
When I looked today there were 92 wines and cavas on offer from 20 vineyards across 6 regions so you should find something that tickles your fancy. They do a fine range of gift cards too for when you haven’t got a clue what to get someone.
Delivery is free in Spain and pretty reasonable for the rest of Europe, though you may have to wait a little longer.
Homage to BCN Discount at Catalunya Wine
Catalunya Wine has kindly given readers of Homage to BCN a discount code for their online shop. Add H2BCN during checkout and receive a 10% discount on your order. Better than a kick in the teeth I’d say!
The Grapes of Catalunya Documentary
And if all that wasn’t enough, for the last 4 months Tim has been working on a documentary, working title, The Grapes of Catalunya. This is definitely something to keep your eye out for and worthy reason enough to sign up for the Catalunya Wine newsletter, though of course I will cover it here too no doubt.
